Recycling Guidelines
Collection Schedule
East Bank – recyclables are collected on your first collection day.
West Bank – recyclables are collected on the second collection day.
Recycle pick up is on Friday in Lafitte!
Materials Accepted
Please clean all materials before placing them in your bin! DO NOT BAG THEM.
Plastic bottles 1 through 7
Aluminum Cans and Foil
Steel Food Cans (i.e. soup, tuna cans)
Corrugated Cardboard
Boxboard (i.e. cereal, shoe boxes)
Paper (newspaper, telephone books, magazines, junk mail, paper bags, envelopes, colored paper, shredded paper should be secured in plastic bags
Materials NOT Accepted:
Paper cups, paper plates, paper towels, napkins, tissues, receipts
Chip bags, candy wrappers, fast food wrappers
Plastic bags, plastic films, shrink wrap
Styrofoam, freezer boxes, waxy containers
Pens, plastic toys, hangers, rubber bands, hoses
Glass
Aerosol Spray Cans , containers that held hazardous materials such as motor oil, pesticide, paint
Wood, yard trimmings
Clothing, shoes
Batteries, electronics
Residential Recycling
Curbside collection of recycled materials will be provided once per week. Recycled materials should be placed in the 18 gallon bin provided by the parish. All materials must be placed in the bin for pickup. Bins from the previous program are acceptable if they are 18-gallon open topped bins, regardless of the color.
Placement and Timing for Curbside Pickup
Recyclables should be placed curbside on a Parish servitude immediately in front of one’s own property and should not be placed out for collection any sooner than 4:00 pm on the day preceding the regular collection day. Emptied containers must be removed from the curb by noon on the day immediately following the collection day.
Requesting an Extra Recycling Bin
Any residential structure containing no more than 3 residential units may request extra recycling bins at no extra cost. To request a bin, call the Dept. of Environmental Affairs at 504-731-4612. The monthly service fee is the same regardless of the number of bins used. Multi-family structures (structures with four or more units) are limited to one bin per unit. Bins will be delivered within three business days of receipt of request.
Replacing a Stolen or Broken Recycling Bin
Recycling bins are provided free of charge. To replace a bin that has been damaged or stolen, call the Dept. of Environmental Affairs at 504-731-4612.
Ineligible Materials
In the event that materials not designated as recyclable are placed in the recycling bin for collection, those items will be left in the bin along with printed notification of an explanation as to why the items were not collected.
Commercial Recycling
Curbside collection of recycled materials will be provided to small businesses that participate in the Parish’s curbside collection program. Recycled materials should be placed in the 18 gallon bin provided by the parish. All materials must be placed in the bin for pickup. Bins from the previous program are acceptable if they are 18-gallon open topped bins, regardless of the color.

Businesses Requesting More Than Two Recycling Bins
The Department of Environmental Affairs may approve, on a case-by-case basis, for a small business unit to obtain additional bins. The business will be charged an additional monthly fee for every additional two (2) bins above the original two (2). To request an extra bin, call the Dept. of Environmental Affairs at 504-731-4612.

Garbage and Recycling
Jefferson Parish Collects the Following:
Twice per week collection of:
Garbage: Jefferson Parish provides for the collection of containerized household garbage twice per week. The Parish has implemented automated or semi-automated service and has provided a specific container (95 gal. tipper cart) which is the only acceptable container to be used.
Once per week collection of:
Recyclables: Household recyclables such as paper and plastic are collected once per week. All items must be placed inside the 18 gallon cart provided by the Parish.
Bulky Waste: Furniture, tree debris, and other items that will not fit in the cart are collected once per week from residential units only. Items can be no longer than 6 ft. in length and/or 400 pounds. Smaller pieces of concrete or shingles must be containerized. Automobile engines must be drained of fluids.
White goods: Large appliances such as refrigerators, ranges, water heaters, freezers, washers or any other similar large domestic appliance, are collected once per week from residential units only (limit 4 per address per week).
Tires: Automotive and small truck tires are collected once per week from residential units only. (limit 4 tires per address per week).
Small businesses may utilize drop-off locations listed below for items not eligible for curbside collection.
Vacant lots do not pay garbage fees; therefore, garbage/trash in front of vacant lots will not be collected.
